I’m Cian Murphy, casino industry analyst and founder of CD Casino Review Hub, currently based in Cork, Ireland. For the past eight years, I’ve been pulling back the curtain on online casinos, testing platforms until they break, and helping players figure out which sites are actually worth their time and money.

Here’s the thing – I didn’t wake up one day dreaming of becoming a casino reviewer. This whole journey started as a side project while I was stuck in a corporate gaming job, noticing how dodgy most casino reviews actually were. Now it’s my full-time mission: creating honest, no-BS casino reviews that actually help players instead of just chasing affiliate commissions.
I’m probably not what you’d picture when you think “gambling expert.” I approach casino reviews like I’m analyzing financial products – because let’s be real, that’s what they are. My background in behavioral economics and fintech means I can spot manipulative design patterns from a mile away.
What I Actually Do
Eight years in the iGaming trenches teaches you things. Mainly that most casino review sites are just glorified advertising platforms pretending to be helpful guides. Not a fan of that approach, to put it mildly.
I’ve worked both sides of this industry – inside gaming companies where I saw how the sausage gets made, and as an independent analyst where I can actually tell the truth. I’ve processed payments at Betsson Group, managed content at Casino.org, built review frameworks at AskGamblers.com, and attended more industry conferences than I care to count (iGB Live Dublin, Sigma Malta, ICE London – they all blur together after a while).
Completed the Introduction to iGaming certification when I was starting out, along with various courses on payment security and responsible gambling. Because credentials matter when you’re telling people where to spend their money.
What I’m Good At
Casino reviews are my main thing, but my expertise covers more ground than just “this slot machine is shiny”:
- Payment systems and why your withdrawal is taking forever
- Responsible gambling tools (and which casinos actually implement them properly)
- Bonus terms translation (from marketing speak to English)
- Behavioral economics and how casinos mess with your brain
- Financial technology and digital payments
- Consumer protection in gambling markets
- Data analysis and figuring out what actually converts
- Content strategy for heavily regulated industries
Where I Studied
Did my undergrad at Trinity College Dublin – BSc in Economics and Finance, graduated 2015. Then headed to London for an MSc in Behavioral Economics at University College London. That master’s program completely changed how I see gambling products.
My thesis researched gamification in online casinos and how it affects player retention. Turns out gaming companies loved that research for all the wrong reasons. But it got me into the industry, so here we are.
The Journey: Year by Year
2015 – False Start
Graduated Trinity and did what you’re supposed to do – got a proper job at KPMG’s financial services division. Lasted nine months before I realized I’d rather eat glass than spend my twenties in corporate consulting. Started a nerdy blog about online payment systems that approximately nobody read.
2016 – Back to School
Escaped to London for my master’s at UCL. Best decision ever. Studying behavioral economics opened my eyes to how industries manipulate decision-making – gambling being the most obvious offender. My dissertation got a distinction and job offers from three gaming companies. Suddenly that blog about payment systems didn’t seem so pointless.
2017 – Welcome to Malta
Joined Betsson Group in Malta as a Junior Payment Systems Analyst. Malta in your mid-twenties is brilliant – sunshine, decent money, and an industry that runs on espresso and impossible deadlines. Learned the technical side of casino operations: payment processing, KYC verification, fraud detection. All the glamorous stuff nobody talks about.
Also met Emma, my partner, who was working in compliance at a rival operator. We bonded over shared frustration with how the industry treats players. She’s still in the industry but on the regulatory side now, keeping me honest.
2018 – Learning the Review Game
Moved to Casino.org as a Content Analyst. This is where I learned how casino reviews actually get made – and why most of them are rubbish. I kept pushing for critical analysis and transparent affiliate disclosures. Management tolerated my idealism because our stuff performed well.
Completed the iGaming Academy course, started hitting conferences. ICE London 2018 was my first proper industry event – absolutely mental, but you meet everyone who matters.
2019 – Stepping Up
Senior Casino Analyst at AskGamblers.com. Bigger platform, more resources, actual testing budgets. Developed standardized review protocols focusing on the stuff that matters: withdrawal times, customer support quality, whether those terms and conditions are actually readable.
Got invited to speak at iGB Dublin about responsible gambling. Emma and I adopted Leo that year – a retired racing greyhound who’s now the unofficial mascot of my work-from-home setup.
2020 – The Breaking Point
Lockdown happened. Online gambling exploded. Watched operators exploit vulnerable players stuck at home, and I’d had enough of working for platforms that cared more about commissions than player welfare.
Started planning CD Casino Review Hub. The concept was simple: brutally honest reviews with complete transparency about how we make money and what we actually test.
2021 – Going Solo
Launched CD Casino Review Hub in March while still at AskGamblers. Traffic was modest at first – couple thousand visitors monthly – but engagement was insane. Turns out people appreciate honesty, who knew?
Attended Sigma Malta, networked like crazy. Made connections with compliance experts and payment processors who’d become valuable sources later.
Left AskGamblers in November to focus on CD Casino Review Hub full-time. Properly terrifying decision, but Emma backed it. We’d saved enough to survive six months without income, and I figured if it tanked, I could always go back to corporate life (though I’d hate every second).
2022 – Building Something Real
Hired my first contractor to rebuild the site properly. Attended iGB Live Amsterdam, connected with the independent review community – folks from Casinomeister and Casino Guru. Small community but genuinely supportive.
Hit breakeven in August through partnerships with operators who actually appreciated honest reviews. Traffic grew to 45,000 monthly visitors by December. More importantly, our email list hit 5,000 engaged readers who actually trusted our recommendations.
2023 – Finding My Voice
Expanded coverage to payment methods, crypto casinos, emerging markets. Spoke at three conferences about independent casino reviews and why the industry needs more oversight.
Hired two freelance writers with proper industry experience. Quality control is everything – every review still gets my final edit before it goes live.
Emma and I got engaged in Galway during summer. Proposed at sunset near the Cliffs of Moher because I’m a sentimental eejit. Wedding’s happening next year.
2024 – Deepening the Work
Focused on quality over quantity. Improved testing methodologies, built relationships with regulatory bodies like the UK Gambling Commission and Malta Gaming Authority. Created comprehensive responsible gambling guides because that stuff actually matters.
Hit more conferences – Betting on Sports in London, SBC Summit in Lisbon. The industry’s shifting toward regulation and player protection, which is exactly what I’ve been banging on about for years.
Moved to a bigger place in Cork with proper office space and a garden. Leo’s delighted with the upgrade.
2025 – What’s Next
Launching video content and podcast interviews with industry insiders, compliance experts, and problem gambling researchers. Making casino education accessible beyond just written reviews.
Working on a comprehensive guide to Ireland’s new gambling regulations. Our regulatory landscape is changing fast, and players need trustworthy information about what it means for them.
Building partnerships with responsible gambling organizations to provide better resources for readers who might be struggling. Yes, I make money from casino affiliates, but not at the expense of player welfare.

Life Outside Casinos
When I’m not testing casino withdrawal speeds or analyzing bonus terms, I’m usually walking Leo along the River Lee, attempting to surf at Inchydoney Beach (key word: attempting), or exploring Cork’s food scene with Emma. We’re both massive food nerds – she makes incredible sourdough, I’ve got the coffee obsession covered.
Big fan of Irish history and archaeology. Spend way too much time visiting ancient sites around the country. There’s something grounding about standing in a 5,000-year-old passage tomb when your day job involves analyzing digital slot machines.
Music taste is all over the map – traditional Irish sessions, electronic stuff, anything by Fontaines D.C. I play mediocre guitar but make excellent Spotify playlists, if I do say so myself.
My Philosophy on Gambling
Here’s my take: gambling is entertainment that costs money, not a way to make money. The second it stops being fun or affordable, it’s time to stop. Simple as that. I wish more casino review sites emphasized this instead of just chasing affiliate commissions.
I’ve seen the damage problem gambling does. I’ve talked to players who’ve lost everything. That’s why responsible gambling isn’t just a box to tick on my reviews – it’s a fundamental part of how I evaluate operators.
