Possible Government Shutdown Looms Large

Reminiscent of the 2013 federal government shutdown weeks after former President Barack Obama was elected to his second term, Congress and the White House are bracing for a shutdown April 29 with Democrats and Republicans vying over which party will get the political blame.  House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) laments there are more than 100 issues remaining to resolve, down from the original 200 issues but now focusing on the more hard-line problems. The leading strategists in the countdown are Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) and the ultra-right House Freedom Caucus. The HFC is the principal roadblock for House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) who sources say is trying to find an accommodation with Pelosi to help nullify the 31-member HFC.
