(UNDERSERVED) DoEd Offers $269M in College Prep Grants

Agency: Education Dept. (DoEd), Office of Postsecondary Education; Program: Student Support Services (SSS) (CFDA Number: 84.042A); Eligibility: Institutions of higher education; Funding: $269 million has been allocated for new awards for the SSS Program for FY 2010. The actual level of funding, if any, depends on final Congressional action. There is a match requirement for some applicants, see below. Estimated number of new awards: 871. Estimated Range of Awards: $220,000-$360,000; Deadline: Dec. 7.

Purpose: These 60-month grants support projects that help disadvantaged low-income college students, first-generation college students, and college students with disabilities successfully complete college. The services provided are intended to increase retention and graduation rates for these students and help them transfer from two-year to four-year colleges and universities. The support services also are supposed to foster the success of students who are limited English proficient, students from groups traditionally underrepresented in college, students with disabilities, students who are homeless, students who are in foster care or are aging out of the foster care system, and other disconnected students.

Cost Sharing or Matching: Applicants must be prepared to match with non-federal money a minimum of 33% of the total amount of the SSS program funds used for this aid. This matching requirement does not apply to institution of higher education eligible to receive funds under Part A or Part B of Title III or under Title V of the HEA.

This program is part of the $848 million TRIO program. SSS is one of eight TRIO programs designed to increase the college retention and graduation rates and help students make the transition from one level of higher education to the next. Insider's Tip: An applicant may submit multiple applications as long as each application describes a project that will serve a different campus or a different population, (i.e., such as a campus located apart from the main campus).
