(ENVIRONMENT) Wisconsin Funds Consortium on Clean Energy

Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle (D) creates a new Clean Energy Generation, Transmission and Storage Systems (CEGTS) Consortium that will provide research and development assistance to industrial leaders on a wide range of technologies that are critical for clean energy development and economic growth.

These technologies include: (1) energy efficiency; (2) wind turbines and power conservation; (3) photovoltaic and concentrated solar; (4) fuel cells; (5) biofuels; and (6) smart grid power systems.

The consortium will have access to the Center for Renewable Energy Systems (CRES), developed at U. of Wisconsin-Madison to conduct sponsored research that focuses on the integration of new clean and renewable energy technologies into highly efficient systems.

Insider's Tip: Consortium activities will be conducted at participating university campuses by researchers from a variety of disciplines and funded by a combination of federal, state, regional, local and private industry sources. The Wisconsin Office of Energy Independence will provide $300,000 in seed capital for the first two years of operation. An additional $37 million will be leveraged in combined sponsored research over a 10-year period.
