(ENVIRONMENT) Nat'l Fish & Wildlife Foundation

Private Funder: Nat'l Fish & Wildlife Foundation (NFWF); Opportunity: Coral Reef Conservation Fund (CRCF); Funding Focus: Environment; Geographic Focus: Multistate (Florida, U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, American Samoa & Guam); Eligibility: Nonprofits; Funding: A majority of awards under this program will fall in the range of $20,000 to $70,000 (all grant awards require a minimum 1:1 match of cash or contributed goods and services); Deadline Dec. 15, (pre-proposal); March 9 (application).

Summary: The Nat'l Fish & Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) sponsors the Coral Reef Conservation Fund (CRCF) which supports public-private partnerships to reduce and prevent degradation of coral reefs and associated reef habitats -- such as seagrass beds and mangroves.

Priority will be given to projects identified in approved watershed management plans and Local Action Strategies that will directly reduce inputs of sediments to priority watersheds. Best Management Practices (BMPs) must include actions like installation of retention gardens, buffers, sediment traps and other actions for preventing land based sources of pollution from reaching coral reef ecosystems. Whenever possible, projects submitted under this category should foster community engagement in the implementation of projects. Projects should also incorporate specific performance metrics to track the effectiveness of project activities in stabilizing and/or decreasing sediment loads to near-shore coral reef ecosystems.

Priority will also be given to projects which improve compliance with fisheries and regulations in U.S. coral reef ecosystems. Projects submitted for funding under this category must focus on improving public knowledge of and compliance with fisheries and regulations through demarcation of boundaries, implementation of community education programs to increase public awareness/understanding of and fisheries regulations, or development and support of 'community watch' programs.

Insider's Tip:  The foundation has very specific application guidelines, which should be followed exactly. The pre-proposal narrative should provide introductory/background information and descriptions of: the project's goals and objectives, how the project supports foundation goals and objectives, the activities/methods to be used in the project, the anticipated outcomes, and the research and management utility of the results/outcomes.
