Auditor Questions Distribution of School Poverty Dollars

Some Nebraska districts may be getting more than their share of state aid dollars because the aid formula uses an inaccurate measure of poverty, Auditor Mike Foley says. For 2005-06, $21.5 million out of the state's total school aid of nearly $685 million was given to districts for low-income students, based primarily on federal free lunch program qualification. Foley says that as many as one in five students in the free lunch program statewide may not be eligible and suggested that state income tax returns would be a more accurate measure of poverty.
