Private Funder: Action For Nature (AFN); Opportunity: 2012 International Young Eco-Hero Awards; Funding Focus: Youth and the environment; Geographic Focus: National; Eligibility: Youth, aged 8-16; Funding: Up to $500 each; Deadline: February 2012 (tentative).

Summary: AFN is a nonprofit organization that encourages young people to carry out individual environmental action projects. The organization believes that young people can have a positive impact on the environment.

Action For Nature created the International Young Eco-Hero Awards to recognize and reward the successful individual environmental initiatives of young people aged 8-16. The awards honor individual young people for their self-initiated projects.

Winners are chosen by a team of independent judges with experience in environmental issues. The applications will be judged according to: originality, difficulty, organization, length of time devoted to the project, use of outside resources (e.g. library, experts, media, community leaders) and the degree of success in reaching goals and the impact on the environment.

Exclusive CYF Insider's Tip: The 2012 Eco-Hero Award application, with a firm deadline, will be available in August, staffers tell CYF.
