Minority/Woman-Owned Firm Wraps Major SC Renovation Project

CARBRA Construction and Design Inc., a minority- and woman-owned general contracting company, recently completed the successful renovation of a new establishment in Columbia, SC’s bustling downtown entertainment district, the Vista. In addition to CARBRA, three other minority-owned businesses provided services for the project, bringing the minority participation rate to more than 50 percent.

‘Innovation in Affordable Housing’ Student Winners Named

The Department of Housing and Urban Development names a graduate student team from the University of Texas at Austin as winners of HUD’s third annual “Innovation in Affordable Housing Student Design and Planning Competition.” The Austin team was one of the four team finalists to develop a plan to redevelop the public housing project Monteria Village in Santa Barbara, CA.

‘Tall Wood Building’ Competition Winners Announced

USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack, while in New York City last week, announced the winners of the U.S. Tall Wood Building Prize Competition. The two winning teams received funding to support the development of tall wood building projects -- one to be built in the Chelsea section of New York City, the other in Portland, OR. They were selected by a panel of architectural and engineering professionals and meet the competition’s criteria for safety, practicality and sustainability.
