At the behest of our loyal readers, the experts at CD Publications have brought you Lessons From The Field: Surviving In The Cutthroat World of the Nonprofit, which has the latest behind-the-scenes information on the goings-on in the world of philanthropic organizations.

The world of the non-profit can be a brutal environment, especially due to the intense competition for funds from the more than 1.5 million nonprofit organizations which are registered in the United States. Of these, 1,036,255 are public charities, 100,796 are private foundations and 370,180 are other types of nonprofit organizations, including chambers of commerce, civic leagues and fraternal organizations. Private grant-making organizations dispense about $335 billion per year.

21% of the over $1.65 trillion revenue of public charities, the previous year, came from contributions, gifts and government grants, whereas 73% came from program service revenues, such as government fees and contracts and 6% came from other sources including rental income, dues, special event income and gains and losses from goods sold. The total expenses of public charities last year was $1.57 trillion. All in all, this sector has a tremendous impact, with non profits accounting for 9.2% of all wages and salaries paid in the United States. Charities reported over $3 trillion in total assets last year.
