The program will increase the rural physician workforce by supporting expansion of family medicine and internal medicine residency training programs in rural hospitals and community-based ambulatory settings. The funding will cover planning and development costs for new rural primary care residency programs.
The new program will increase diversity and cultural competence of the health professions workforce providing care in underserved communities. Grant activities and partnerships will focus on supporting education, training, licensure, and career placement of health professions students from disadvantaged backgrounds, including racial and ethnic minorities underrepresented among health professionals.

The grantees will develop and operate satellite American Job Centers correctional facilities to address the employment barriers of incarcerated offenders as they transition into the community and the workforce.
The program provides more than 40 million community service hours to public and nonprofit agencies, allowing them to enhance and provide needed services. Participants work an average of 20 hours a week, and are paid the highest of federal, state or local minimum wage. This training serves as a bridge to unsubsidized employment opportunities for participants.
Grantees provide services to newly arriving refugees to strengthen ethnic communities comprised and ensure ongoing support and culturally-sensitive services to refugees within five years after their initial resettlement.
The funding goes for governments to collect data on maternal attitudes and experiences before, during and after pregnancy. The grantees use the data to inform maternal and child health programs by monitoring health behaviors, access to care and receipt of services.
These centers will conduct high quality research and help translate scientific discoveries into practical applications that improve worker safety and health in the areas of agriculture, forestry and fishing. Center functions should include developing holistic approaches that link basic science with translation and outreach activities.
The program will support the creation of effective practice model partnerships between state courts and public child welfare agencies, tribes and tribal organizations for effective implementation of the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978 (PL 95-608)
The program funds state longitudinal data systems tracking workers from pre-kindergarten to post-secondary and through the workforce system while protecting individual privacy.
