Hospice QRP: Reconsideration Period Ends Soon

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services mailed notifications to hospices that were determined to be out of compliance with Hospice Quality Reporting requirements for CY 2015, which will affect their FY 2017 Annual Payment Update (APU). CMS will not accept any requests for reconsideration submitted after the 30-day deadline.

Hospitalization Rates Remain High for Patients in For-Profit Hospices

Patients who were asked where they wanted to die upon entering hospice had lower rates of hospitalization at the end of life, as did those in hospices that monitored symptoms more frequently, according to a new study led by researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

New Opioid Guidelines Could Impact Advanced-Stage Cancer Patients

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released new guidelines for prescribing opioids for chronic pain that strongly advise against their use for the routine management of chronic pain, with the exception of cancer patients under active treatment, patients receiving palliative care, and those in hospice care. Hospice and palliative healthcare providers should be vigilant that these proposed policies, along with other new state regulations, do not restrict access for the large population of patients with significant chronic pain in the context of serious illness and end-of-life.
