Senate Appropriators Kill SHIP, Severely Slash Senior Jobs Program

The Senate Appropriations Committee has advanced an FY17 funding bill that cuts two critical programs for older adults. The measure would eliminate all $52.1 million in funding for the Medicare State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) and deeply cut the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) by $34.4 million.

The president's FY 2017 budget proposal for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) calls for $1.17 trillion in mandatory and discretionary outlays, a net increase of $26, billion above the FY 2016 level. Omnibus Bill Approved; No Government Shutdown

Congress approves a bipartisan agreement on an omnibus appropriations bill for the remainder of FY 2016. Apparently deciding that a shutdown going into an election year could hurt them, the GOP leadership dropped most of the so-called “poison bill” policy riders opposed by the White House.

$323 Million in ‘Budget Bypass’ Funding Sought for Alzheimer’s Research

The National Institutes of Health is making a special budget request for additional funding to support research on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
